March 2019 Newsletter
Albury Estate Newsletter
It has been an unusual winter so far with the weather being reasonably kind to us and plenty of good fishing conditions. As I write this report (26thFeb) temperatures are nearing 20 degrees Celsius. This warm weather has encouraged good numbers of anglers out onto the bank and the last two weeks have seen just under 600 fish landed. The unseasonably mild weather has encouraged good buzzer hatches with anglers taking fish on buzzers, diawl bachs and small nymphs fished on floating lines. However first thing in the morning it is still on the cool side with the fish preferring slightly deeper water and then moving up the water column once temperatures started to rise. With this in mind an intermediate or sink tip line has its advantages. As always the ever faithful BFD has accounted for a load of fish as have Cats Whiskers in various sizes and styles.
We have seen plenty of stunning hard fighting rainbows landed as well as some more spartic trout that have provided some varied and exciting sport for anglers. To complement our own rainbow and brown trout we will see more loads of spartic, tiger, blue and golden trout stocked over the coming months.
The spartic trout (see picture below) have proved very popular with anglers as there are very few fisheries in the UK that stock them.
Please remember that we are fast approaching the end of our current season which means that all blue 2018/19 tokens will expire the end of March 2019 with the new season commencing April 1st2019. The new season will see a slight day ticket price increase but buying online will be cheaper than buying on the bank.
Season rod packages will benefit as last season with the freedom to fish when you like over all waters with Powdermills remaining as last season for season rod holders only. We will continue to run more Albury Fishing Club Events which have been very popular with talks and demos from Andy Ford and Peter Cockwill as well as away days fishing for grayling on the river Test and Itchen. This coming season we are adding another add on to the season rod bundle with some exclusive river and lake fishing which we should have in place by early April so watch this space.
Season rods and fish tokens for the new season (2019/20) will be available from the 16h March 2019 (so effectively valid for 13 months) and if you buy your season rod in March 2019 you will get it at last year’s price of £190 and come April 1st it will go up to £195. Fish token prices remain the same as last year.
TEACH IN DAYS
Other news is that we will be running more of the very popular TeachIn days which offer a fantastic introduction to fly fishing. These instruction events will divide into a morning and an afternoon session, each running for three hours. Book in for the morning session, running from 9am-Noon, or the afternoon session, running from 1pm until 4pm. The price per head is £48 and includes instruction for the duration, a 1 fish ticket and tackle provision. Maximum 8 people per session. The dates are 26thApril, 10thMay and 14thJune. Please book through our website.
Also just to let you know that we will yet again have a stand at the London Fly Fishing Show on the 22nd and 23rd March 2019 at the Business Design Centre in Islington. It’s a great show and if you attend pop over for a chat.
ENGLAND RIVERS FLY FISHING TEAM
Some other exciting news is that Albury Estate Fishery is proud to be sponsoring the England Rivers Fly Fishing Team in this year’s Home International on the River Agivey in Ireland which I am fortunate to be part of. This will take place in July where we will compete against Scotland, Ireland and Wales with each team consisting of 6 members. This is largely self-funded so as a team we are looking to do some fund-raising. So with this in mind I am auctioning off a number of days fishing which will be hosted by members of the England Team. I have listed the lots below and the auction runs until March 15th.
One days trout and grayling fishing for 2 people on the famous River Itchen on private water near Winchester. The day will be hosted by Cameron Craigs who will show you the water and accompany you for the day. To be taken April to October 2019. Guide price £250 (starting bid £150). Sealed bids only to Cameron.

A days fishing for one person in Devon with England Team Member and National Rivers Champion Mark Lynch. Mark will be your host for the day and the river venue will be dictated by conditions with Mark having access to a number of rivers including the Exe, Tamar, Lyn to name a few. To be taken May to September 2019. Guide Price £120 (starting bid £80). Sealed bids only to Cameron.
Finally I would like to thank you for all your support during the 2018/19 season and we look forward to seeing you all in what we hope will be another great season at Albury Estate Fisheries.
