October 2014 Newsletter
Well, summer is finally at an end and we have just had the first frost of autumn and as I write this report we are receiving some fairly constant heavy rain which is most welcome to freshen up the lakes and drive down the lake temperatures and improve the fishing prospects. The autumn and winter will offer some fantastic fishing to those anglers willing to give it a go. The colder months will often see the trout at their most active and fishing action can be explosive.
Tactics for the coming months will see a shift away from imitative fly patterns to more attractor patterns with small bright lures like Blue Flash Damsel and Cats Whisker being the most popular. Also try hothead damsels with an orange or green bead head. Nomads should also produce well, try the olive and white versions. Floating lines should cover most situations as long as it is accompanied by a weighted fly. Leaders between 9 and 12 foot are ideal.
In summary the summer fishing has been tough during the hot bright weather but those anglers willing to be patient were rewarded with some cracking fish. The key to success seemed to be centred around delicate presentation with fine leaders in the 3lb to 4lb class and small flies doing the job.
Transitioning from rivers
The river season is now over and some enjoyable sport has been had by anglers with a mix of wild and stocked fish being taken. Office river beat at Weston appeared to produce some wonderful wild trout sport with weighted nymphs working well early season then dry flies from May until the end of the season.
A reminder that from 1st October winter season rods are available for six months to 31st March 2015. Prices start from £197.50 for 10 fish. Also those of you interested in joining the waiting list for fishing at Albury Park please email Tony Hern. New applications will be considered from 1st January 2015, with the new season starting in April. If you have not fished in Park before, its two greatest attributes are the peace and quiet and the stunning parkland setting contributing towards a generally ‘more undisturbed’ day than on the busier day waters.
