The fishing as ok last week with 70 fish caught. The river at Vale End fished well, aided by the cooler river water and shade provided by plenty of tree cover. Small nymphs run through the deeper pools did well and then later in the evening the dry fly sport was good, particularly using sedge patterns. On the lakes it was a case of concentrating your efforts on Wood Lodge and Kingfisher pools at Weston and Mill lake at Vale End. On the carp lake the fishing has been good with fish very happy to feed off the surface. The key to this is to introduce plenty of floating biscuits and then let them feed confidently for 10 to 20 minutes before presenting your fly to them. Also a stealthy approach is important and sitting or crouching behind the reeds will make the fish less wary. Other tactics for the carp would be to stalk them with egg, worm or blobs that sink slowly. With the water being so clear you can spot the carp and drop the fly in front of them. They are more likely to take the fly on the drop, so don't retrieve it otherwise it will spook the fish.
