Updated 26th November

Pleased to report that we recieved our first winter stocking of spartic trout and over the winter we will be stocking around 1000 of them as well as the usual rainbow trout and the odd brown trout.

Some really quality brown trout caught last week (see pics above).

There were 126 fish caught last week between all the Albury waters. The fish are holding in certain areas at the moment so its important to make sure you locate the fish by looking for movement on the surface or by spotting them in the clear water. The fish are not deep and can be found in the first couple of feet of water so no need for anything more than a floating line and longish leader at the moment. Flies with very little weight such as diawl bachs, hares ear, buzzers and dry flies will work well. Also pullng big lures, just under the surface was successful.

Also we will be running a days Masterclass with Peter Cockwill on Tuesday 26th November for those wanting to brush up on their stillwater skills. The morning  sessions will run from 9am to 11am and an afternoon session from 12pm to 2pm. Please email me at [email protected] to book either a morning or afternoon session or both if you like.

Updated 25th October

So we have been open for a few weeks now.  The fishing has been interesting, with fish mainly being caught in the afternoons.  A reason behind this could be because dissolved oxygen will be higher later in the day, opposed to the mornings, where dissolved oxygen will be at its lowest.  The higher the dissolved oxygen, the more active the trout will be, therefore will be feeding and up for a chase.  The weather has also been all over the place, being very mild and some decent sun and afternoon temperatures for this time of year.

We still can’t put our finger on a good fly to use, as its has been a real mixture of fly’s that fish have been caught on.  The fish aren’t deep, top 2-3 feet of water.  We also can’t pin point where the fish are, fish are coming out in all areas of the lake.  Our tip would be to keep moving, fan cast, and a nice long leader.

Fish being caught earlier in the day seem to be on small natural flys e.g. Hares ear, PTN, Diawl Bach, small wet flys, buzzers.  One of our members had a fish come up and take a wet fly hopper, so mixing up your tactics and thinking about your method is key at the moment. KEEP MOVING!

Fish being caught late afternoons seem to be up for a chase and looking for a big meal; therefore damsels have been working well.  BFD, Black blue flash, solid olive with gold head.  Cats Whisker or  a Montana in the afternoons is worth a try.  REMEMBER – KEEP MOVING.

Winter season membership is now available to purchase on line.  Winter season membership is great value for money, as this gives you unlimited access to Syon Park and some of the waters at Albury (Weston, Vale End, and the season members only lake – Powder Mills).

We shall also be open to day membership here at Syon over the winter.

Over August and September, we continued our general maintenance around the lake, as well as some essential maintenance works – this was a partial drain down.  The overall aim of this was to help dry out the reeds, bank faces and the concrete stanchions on the bridge to help control Argulus (lice).  It also allows us to replenish the lake with fresh water.

The Albury weed boat has been taking some action here at Syon.  We undertook some weed removal as we do every year, and a general tidy up of floating debris.

We have also had a stocking of quality Albury Estate rainbow trout over the last couple of days, so we are all set for the re-opening of Syon lake @ Albury Estate Fisheries.

Please remember to purchase all day memberships and tokens via our website, as this speeds up the booking in process on the bank.

Please can all of our members make sure you sign in and out of the fishery, record the fish that you take, and tokens MUST be placed in our returns box.  If you run out of tokens whilst fishing, please call the bailiff to top up your tokens, as all anglers must be in possession of fish tokens to cover the fish that you have caught, plus any other fish you wish to catch.

Please like and follow our facebook page.  Keep your eye out for some great fishing pictures.  You can also find us on X (previously twitter), where we also post regular updates and photos.

It is all about method and finding the depth of the fish at this time of year.  We aren’t seeing fish showing on the surface, so this indicates that they will be low/deep.

Jan has fished at Syon and had this lovely bag of Albury Estate rainbow trout.

He regularly changed his depth until he found the fish.  This is his method and has paid off. 1 foot down 15 mins – nothing, 2 foot down 15 mins – nothing, 3 foot down, bingo! 3 feet down under an indicator using an Olive tungsten head scud.

If indicators aren’t your thing, an intermediate line with a sinking/poly leader with tungsten head lures or nymphs will give you that depth without touching the bottom.  These poly leaders all sink at different rates, so read the description before you buy any.

If you only have a floating line, make sure you still use a sinking/poly leader or attach a sink tip to your floating line and use a fluorocarbon leader with a weighted lure.  Sinking/poly leaders are readily available online.

There is so much information online now.  Guys have tried full sinking lines with boobies but their fly comes back in with weed off of the bottom.

Something we commonly see here is anglers stripping lures on a floating line with monofilament leader, often too short, which will not reach the depth of the fish, leaving anglers frustrated.  It’s about presentation of your fly within the water column. Rule of thumb the leader should be the length of your rod at least (9-10 foot).  Fluorocarbon line/leader sinks faster in the water than a monofilament line/leader.

Floating lines are great here at Syon in spring and summer months when we begin to have buzzer hatches, emergers and surface insects.  The fish begin rising and are higher in the water column.

Change your method, move around and cover different areas of the lake.  This is the best advice.  Also, speak to our other members and their tactics if they are catching.  Speak to the bailiff regarding where the fish are or have been being caught.

The lake here at Syon is a vast expanse of water, and the fish have the ability to go deep.  The lake in the deeper water is 10-12 foot deep. Its about locating the fish and the method approached.

More wet weather last week kept attendance low with only 133 fish caught across all waters. There are lots of fish showing in all the lakes but they are finicky, so patience and perseverance is needed. I would recommend lighter tippet at the moment, around 4lb to 5lb should do it and overall leader length of 10ft to 12ft or longer if you can manage it. The fish are high in the water so a floating line is still all that is needed. Try pulling lures first and then work though smaller patterns such as diawl bachs and small nymphs. Also daddy long legs fished dry or wet will pick up fish if conditions are right with cloud cover and a nice ripple on the surface.

Some beautiful autumnal weather about at the moment with some cooler overnight temperatures which is cooling the lakes down nicely. As the lake temperatures cool we will gradually be stocking more fish into the lakes and expect the fishing to be back to its best by the beginning of October. Also we have winter season rods now available on our website which run from October 1st 2024 to the end of March 2025. They offer great value for money at £140 for 6 months fishing during the best time of year when the fish are in peak condition, as well as giving you access to Powdermills, Weston, Vale End and Syon Park fishery.

Other good news is that the cafe at Weston is now open Tuesday to Friday, 8.30am to 2.30pm serving delicious food and drink. Could all day ticket anglers please report to the cafe/lodge during cafe opening times to register. Outside of these times, the bailiff will see you on the bank.

Some stunning brown trout have been caught with the biggest being 12lb 8oz and smallest 10lb 8oz. Now the weather is warming up (slightly) the fish are really feeding on naturals such as buzzers and small nymphs.

A couple of really quality brown trout for Freddie Botha and James Evans this week.

If you are after a nice breakfast before you start fishing, there is a restaurant on site in Hilliers Garden Centre that serves a good breakfast, other hot food, and hot and cold beverages.

We are trialling line disposal bins around the lake.  They are around the lake and one box at the hut.  We would like to ask our members kindly, to not fill these with general rubbish.  General rubbish can still be disposed of in the bin at the fishery hut. Thank you.

*** We would like to remind our members to purchase your day membership and tokens via our website before arriving at the fishery. *

Some improvements to the fishery entrance have now been completed.  We have removed the green exit button, so you will now need to use your membership card when both entering and exiting the fishery.

Please continue to sign in and out of the fishery, and ensure that fish tokens are posted into the returns box.
